keep your fork. A dying woman’s request
By on February 4th, 2009
As January came to an end I noticed that I was missing that “new beginnings” feeling that was so strong just a couple weeks earlier. You know that feeling that is almost like being in a new romantic relationship? The courtship with endless possibilities.
I love the new year, I love starting fresh. But then what happens? Well like most new things, it looses it’s allure because… uhh well it’s just not new and exciting any more. Sad but true, we are so easily distracted right?
So on my quest to keep the romance going this year, I was listening to an audio recording from inspiration guru Jack Canfield. He tells a insightful story about an elderly woman who is about to die and requests that her minister meet with her to plan her funeral because she knows that her kids won’t get things done exactly as she wishes.
During their meeting she tells her minister the dress she wants to be buried in, that she wants an open casket, which song she wanted read and a few other important details for the funeral.
And lastly she says “I want to buried with my bible in my left hand and a fork in my right hand.” The minister of course understands the bible but when he questions her about the fork, she says that whenever she’s been to dinner at a friend’s house or a church social if there is something really delicious being served for dessert, like apple pie or chocolate cake, they always say ” ‘Keep you fork’ and then I know that the best is still yet to come.”
That was just the message I needed. Hello, that’s right; the best of 2009 is still yet to come. So even though February is often about chocolate and champagne I’m going into the next month with my intentions strong and the romance alive.
I’ll keep my fork, thanks!
