creative entrepreneurs open the little green grocer

What’s happening in Portland, Oregon is reflective of a growing number of millions worldwide; entrepreneurs are getting more creative and choosing paths unlike previous ones taken, following their passion(s) to live sustainably, finding success and in the process, giving value to their surrounding communities.
It’s inspiring to be a witness.
Last month I was contacted by two of my former clients, Nancy Galanty and Scott Lekovish who made a major life shift and decided to give birth to the Little Green Grocer -Â an adorable organic market in Portland’s Pearl District, that blends local products with community in a throwback to times past when shoppers and shopkeepers knew each other by name.
Scott and Nancy moved to Portland from San Francisco in December of 2006 with the intention of keeping their jobs in technology and marketing while raising their two daughters, Roma and Liv (who was born in Portland).
When I asked Scott about the idea, he admits, “it was an idea we’d always held in our hearts and we (both Nancy and I) loved shopping at places like the Little Green Grocer.”
When I asked him why Portland, he explained, “The barriers to entry in Portland seemed less intimidating than San Francisco which held the pressure of shooting out of the gate and becoming a huge success. Here there is more wiggle room and creative freedom.”
Included in the Little Green Grocer’s mission is to provide great food to the neighborhood from good predominant local sources and supporting artisans at both the local and national level.
As Scott describes, “It is equally important to have a shop that sells organic and local sustainable products.”
“The most rewarding part has been bringing this neighborhood together. It’s nice to have a local setting that builds community. It’s been really exciting to see the same people come in two or three times a day, and witness to the re-union of people who haven’t seen each other for a few weeks. That’s only going to grow as more members of the community come in.”
Scott makes sure to mention his employees who are an integral part of the business family. “They are a creative and motivated group who believe in the core values of Little Green Grocer and have carried us through the first week.”
A loyal customer recently told Scott, “The talk of the dog park has finally switched from Sarah Palin to the Little Green Grocer.â€
That made me smile.

Thanks Cheryl for the great write up of Little Green Grocer, it made me a little weepy…in a good way! You really captured our intention and our passion for building community, supporting small and local farmers who produce incredible product sustainably.
There’s a documentary coming out called “Food Inc.” It’s about big box supermarkets role in the current state of agribusiness in the US. A review of the film in Variety says, “Food Inc does for the big grocery store what Jaws did for the beach!” Hope so!!
Please come in to see us again.
Love,
Nancy

I just read the other day about how Portland is like the greenest urban city in US, or something like that. This store sounds like completely up our alley.
I’ll give it a Stumble.
I hope they become wildly successful and franchise out in St. Paul.
