energy-saving subway station looks like a spaceship

The new Shibuya Station (subway station) in Tokyo, Japan, designed by Tadao Ando, looks like an underground spaceship, situated 30 meters down. In a recent interview with Wallpaper Ando explains some concepts behind the design.

“It is composed of a central void contained inside an egg-shaped shell and aims to reduce the station’s dependency on air conditioning equipments by letting the outside air blow into the underground space, creating a natural ventilation system that is energy saving.”

We love that. The hub station is a connector to 2.5 million commuters who use the underground system and that section sees about 400,00 of them daily. The idea behind the design was to keep a continuous flow of energy moving smoothly. That translates to a positive experience for the traveler and very good Feng Shui. I’m seriously impressed.

The ICFF (International Contemporary Furniture Fair) happened last month in New York City and I’m still finding the coolest shit…and it’s all very inspiring….Check it out….

This laptop, designed by Yves Behar is solar powered for children in poor countries.

“Design brings stories to life.” –Yves Behar. Behar blends high design and ethics and it’s beautiful.

Peter Stathis’ lamp uses LED lights with a very long life, and the ring doubles as a handle to move the lamp around.” ::Via SFGate.com. Philip what do you think of these? I really love the feet. It’s eco-task lighting that feels whimsical and alive like a baby cylon.

“Rangoli rug: Rangoli, by Spanish designer Nanimarquina, is made by traditional carpet weavers in India.” :: Via SFGate.com.

The organic feel to this is simply Divine. This would also make a gorgeous wall hanging, especially in an entryway. What a wonderful greeter.

Dform design. I love the set up of their booth shown here. The warm colors just draw me in…

‘Hungry’ Silverware Chandelier by Fabbian…Ok, so it may not be the best Feng Shui to be standing under forks with sharp points coming at you, but I still think this piece of art is super fabulous, especially over a kitchen island. Let’s just ditch the forks. The rounded knives can stay.

Bazzeo fabulous green kitchen design. Their website greeter reads, “The purpose of man is to live in harmony with nature.” We would like to add women in there too and then yes, we agree.
