a wireless router in a vase

Um, yes you heard right. A new idea that blends technology and style; it’s a wireless router in a vase that holds flowers.

According to the designers STC (Saudi Telecom), “The idea was to create a unique router design that would provoke a positive emotional response. Wireless internet, Voice over IP, land line telephone and wired DSL are all incorporated into this elegant device.”

Excellent feng shui balance to calm the electormagnetic energy with a flower and help stabilize the energy of the space. Plus it looks fabulous.

paperless boarding passes new at airports

Nope…I don’t see any paper boarding pass around do you? How eco-chic is that….

Imagine this. The airport industry is saving $500 million a year by not printing any more paper boarding passes….and ooohhh, that’s a lot of savings in trees! Now imagine this. The system is much safer than it’s paper counterpart, complete with encryption codes approved by the Transportation Security Administration. You just check in with your personal electronic device or cel phone. So no worries about so called “terrorists” getting through. This actually makes it harder for any funny stuff, since any tampering with the system shows up immediately and fake boarding passes are easier to detect. What am I talking about? Here’s the skinny…

In real time (like right now) many airlines (i.e. Air Canada, Japan Airlines, Scandinavian Airlines and Spanair) have adopted the electronic pass system (that I just described above) and it’s working perfectly.

According to the NY Times, “The Transportation Security Administration has been working with Continental Airlines since December to test electronic boarding passes, which for now can be used only for nonstop domestic flights out of the Houston hub of Continental.” That is until it is finally approved…That’s pretty rock-n-roll eco. I’m seriously inspired!

And as the NY Times reported, “The technology being tested by Continental uses a two-dimensional encrypted bar code, which is much tougher to copy than the one-dimensional bar code used by many airlines for boarding passes printed online. And that is a major reason the T.S.A. is expected to embrace the technology.”

Hmmm….makes me like the airline industry just a bit more….Pretty eco-conscious. Imagine the influence it will have on the rest of us…Getting on board will have new eco-chic meaning…

bamboo re-chargeable phone

Rock star quality, this cel phone is the most earth friendly electronic gadget I’ve seen on the market yet.

Okay, so check this out. I hit on this piece of eco-news yesterday on Inhabitat and I’ll explain it to you here in simple terms. This mobile phone, a finalist at the 2008 Greener Gadgets Design Competition, is made out of bamboo. Yes, you heard me right.

It’s biodegradable so when placed in the landfill, it decomposes into a bamboo plant.

What is the most amazing aspect of this phone? It charges manually with muscle power. There is a cranking device (see first photo) that gives it enough power to make a phone call. That means you never have to plug into the wall. Talk about saving precious resources.

The case is made out of bio-plastic from renewable sources.

This sleek and elegant beauty was designed by eco-tech-maverick Gert-Jan van Breugel. According to his website, he graduated in 2007 Cum Laude at the Design Academy in Eindhoven, department Man and Mobility and currently works for firms in Holland and Belgium.

You Europeans are so advanced.

According to Inhabitat, “The phone was designed in response to the one billion new handsets being produced every year, with only 10% being recycled. The average mobile customer replaces their phone once every 18 months, causing 36kg of carbon dioxide to be released in the manufacture of a 90 gram phone.”

This is going to hit the marketplace with a serious eco-chic vengeance. I can tell you this—I’ll be first in line.

Please support this product and get in touch with Gert-Jan van Breugel!
