westfalia goes solar, let’s go hippie

It looks like the next generation of hippies might be driving around in this adorable new version of a Westfalia Verdie which is a hybrid and has solar panels on the roof. Isn’t She fabulous?

According to the company,  “The Verdier Solar Power model offers several innovations such as a system of intellegent solar panels called “SUN TRACKER.” This system makes it possible to provide electricity to the on-board accessories while the vehicle is in a stationary position. An on-board computer and a GPS (Global Positioning System) calculate the optimal position for the SUN TRACKER.

My friend Linda who is sitting here next to me as I write this saw the photo and said, “Oh look, it looks like a happy little pill bug.” Totally. You know those pill bugs that roll up in a ball when you touch them? How cute. Can we go buy one now and go on a road trip?

a flying greenhouse and peace on earth

No, it’s not another episode of Lost, although I kinda thought that too. You might wonder, then, what a flying greenhouse made out of 32 helium-filled transparent balloons, one with 31 smaller ones around it, held together by a special net is doing in the middle of a magical forest in the eastern part of the Netherlands in a place called Sonsbeek Park and why. Well… there’s a a festival going on this summer with sculptures (like this one made by architect Tomas Saraceno) placed around the forest. The idea is to experiment with pieces that can live harmoniously with nature.

“Saraceno dreams of a world in which people no longer need passports and since this cannot as yet be realized on the ground he is looking to the sky.” Source: Designnws.com

“Plants can grow in the large balloon while the smaller ones ensure the the temperature remains constant. The Flying Green House hangs between the trees and visitors can climb a ladder to take a look inside.” Source: Designnws.com

What a beautiful design and powerful symbology. We humans are capable of so much especially when given the opportunity. It’s easy to imagine peace on earth right here, right now.

i heart a hair salon with a low carbon footprint

New York City does it again - a fabulous and apparently amazing hair salon owned by three Italian straight men build a green structure for their ION Studio hair salon. According to T Magazine’s Senior Editor, Sandra Ballentine, “the whole salon was designed using green or recycled materials and is powered by wind plus extremely reasonable prices for cuts and color.” Sweet. I like the plywood hair washing chairs. I wonder if they give good head massages. That always gets me coming back.

a ufo with LED lighting

You know me, I get seriously excited when I see something different in the world of design, crazy as it may seem at times. And this is no exception. Artist Peter Coffin and lighting designers Cinimod Studio collaborated on a lighting display that involved flying a UFO over Gdansk in Poland earlier this month. That’s hot. Over 3000 LED lights were used in the fabulous display of an alien invasion. Makes you kind of wonder where Coffin and Cinimod Studio got their inspiration. TV? Maybe in a dream? Who knows. Maybe one of them is an alien him/herself. It really doesn’t matter. To pull this off is no small feat. Hats off to you.

No it’s not War of the Worlds but it kind of feels like it, huh?

What a beautiful LED glow.

a cute boy committed to eco-driving

Okay so he’s more than a boy. We all know George Clooney has been named one of the sexiest men alive. What’s even sexier than his body, is his earth conscious mind. He is shown here next to his electric Tango one-seater but word on the street has it that he’s set to buy a Tesla next month. I agree with George, “We going to have to get away from oil.” You said it Baby.
