Oh beautiful cow, let’s use your poo to generate power.
Okay, so cow poo may never actually make it into the New York eco-chic couture circles, but here on Planet Pink n’ Green, you cows get our vote. Here’s the eco-news..
Inhabitat reported California PG&E’s recently adopted system to create natural gas from a vat of liquid-cow poo. Yes, you heard me right…. Okay, so it doesn’t smell of lavender fields, but, more importantly, it is helping to heal the planet. Manure when left to decompose, produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas, dozens of times more damaging than CO2.

As Inhabitat suggests: “Of course, encouraging less meat-eating might be a more obvious and easy solution to this problem, but of course, since it seems impossible to wean all Americans off hamburgers, this scheme might just be the next greatest thing.” We agree…
This falls under the category of recycling in creative ways.

Yes! It’s true believe it or not, you can make natural gas from manure. Not only that, by adding a step or two to the process, you can actually use the gas to fuel cars, trucks, buses, etc. This directly reduces dependence on foreign oil and moves us to use of clean, ultra-low carbon fuels for transportation. What good news!
We certainly have plenty of cows and thus this is a renewable, plentiful source of natural gas. You can also use this science to make biogas from solid waste and other organic materials contained in landfills. Keep your eye out for more exciting news on this front. http://www.biomethanesummit.com.
