art installation and one million zip ties

It’s just another day on creative planet earth. Feast your eyes on this art installation, “Third Space” which showed at Designers’ Saturday in Langenthal, Switzerland, last weekend and was made out of over one million cable ties meshed together.
52 students from the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, Germany designed and installed the piece which feels very sci-fi futuristic to me, kind of like being on a space ship.
The idea behind Third Space is an experiment that tackles three areas of design; interior design, product design and designing in free space. From a feng shui perspective this piece demands respect. It’s like being inside a beautiful flower with thorns.
According to the lecturers at the event, “The visitor is dipping into an abstract/concrete light/landscape. There are several seatings reminding the visitor of a bird´s nest and is an invitation for ‘cocooning’ “.
What a fascinating exploration of design and human capabilities. I’ll never look at a zip-ties the same again.
