art exhibit voussoir cloud

Deep breath and a light heart is the way to describe my reaction to this art exhibit in Los Angeles at Sci-ARC Gallery, called Voussoir Cloud by San Francisco architecture and design practice IwamotoScott in collaboration with Buro Happold, running from August 8 - September 14, 2008. A voussoir, as defined by Wikipedia, “is a wedge-shaped element used in building an arch.” Okay, now I get it. (See photo below.) The idea behind the project as explained by the designer, “is to explore the coupling of potentially conflicting constructional logics – the pure compression of a vault with an ultra-light sheet material.” ::Source: Bustler
That’s high design thinking outside of the box. Normally, the material mostly used in this type of construction is stone.
Gazing upon this organic structure makes me think of butterflies in the sun.
What a beautiful dance between the shapes and the light. Now that’s good feng shui.
