Sustainable luxury in a beautifully designed chair

Coffee_bean_chair__4.jpg
Coffee_bean_chair__4.jpg

This fabulous eco-chair is made out of re-used coffee bags and designed by architect Milan Heger.

The love-bug just hit me hard once again after I was introduced to this chair. It exudes modern design with an ethnic glow. It’s also 100% green and comfy cozy.

I asked Milan Heger about his inspiration and the sustainable qualities of the design. Here’s what he had to say:

“This chair came about when I was invited to take part in a competition for a design show at the ‘Drop City Gallery‘ in Seattle. I was sketching and drinking coffee, and the coffee idea made its way into the design.

He goes on to say, “Every piece of material on that chair is either re-used (coffee bags), recycled (environmental low-emissions foam) and salvaged (metal legs). These materials are all bio-degradable. The design is a clean modernist expression and the seat offers comfortable ergonomic positioning of the body.”

Right now it’s a one of a kind piece. Heger is currently seeking distribution and/or licensing opportunities.

You’ve got our support. Keep up the fabulous work.

Green is sexy, so say the statistics…

GreenIsSexy.jpg
GreenIsSexy.jpg

Headless woman in a ‘green is sexy’ t-shirt…Hmm…Once again headless shots in Feng Shui are considered not-so-good for one’s self-esteem…Oh well…

I just couldn’t help but get a giggle from a recent post on Treehugger on how green is sexy. I’ll just be quiet now and share…

According to Treehugger, “Study Shows Green is Hot -A national survey conducted in the US by Kelton Research for GM shows some encouraging trends:”

Fuel- efficient — The new chick magnet? “Close to nine in 10 women (88 percent) say they’d rather chat up someone with the latest fuel-efficient car versus the latest sports car.”

How to win friends and influence people. “Eighty percent of American car buyers would find someone with the latest model fuel-efficient car more interesting to talk to at a party than someone with the latest model sports car.”

Not green? That’s a fashion don’t. “More than four out of 10 (45 percent) 18-43 year-olds say it’s a fashion faux-pas nowadays to have a car that is not green or environmentally friendly.”

Those statistics are hot. I do happen to think helping to heal the planet is sexy and my next car will be an electric hottie. Goddess bless eco-gasms. Scuppies of the world, unite.

16 year-old boy discovers ingredients to quickly biodegrade plastic bags

These days, more and more of us are saying good-bye to plastic bags (China has officially banned them) and hello to our own personal shopping totes. We love that. However, something even more exciting is on the horizon. Daniel Burd, an 11th grader at Waterloo Collegiate Institute in Ontario Canada recently discovered how to biodegrade plastic bags within months instead of years. That’s an eco-lover’s dream. The only by-products are water and a tiny amount of CO2.

Daniel Burd with his award.

As reported by The Record, “Daniel Burd’s project won the top prize at the Canada-Wide Science Fair in Ottawa. He came back with a long list of awards, including a $10,000 prize, a $20,000 scholarship, and recognition that he has found a practical way to help the environment.”

Daniel’s discovery has the opportunity to heal the planet in ginormous proportions.

Putting soul into veterinary care…

Urban eco-chic reception and waiting area at Mt. Tabor Veterinary Care located at 4246 SE Belmont St. #1 in Portland, Oregon.

You know that relaxed feeling that comes over you after discovering the perfect Veterinarian for your darling feline or canine? I do. I happen to be in love with my Vet, Dr. Kristin Sulis who is not only the most caring animal doctor I’ve ever known, but also the most savvy physician, always up-to date on the latest technology. She’s quite the animal-human advocate and passionate about her work.

Dr. Sulis recently went solo and opened up her own private practice, Mt. Tabor Veterinary Care. Yesterday, I took my cat Baby in for an appointment and stepped into the lounge-esque waiting area on hip SE Belmont St. I hung out on the couch with my girl while I gazed up at the most adorable retro-pineapple chandelier and guess what else? To top it off, I was served tea and cookies on the most beautiful plate.

Dr. Sulis and my “Baby” in a loving moment before getting an x-ray…

I do have to say a word on the eco-chic nature of the space. All the architectural work was done with the utmost care for the environment. The far brick wall (in the first photo) was sandblasted to reveal the original brick color and incorporated in the design of the space. Did I mention that I was the Interior Designer on the project? It was fabulous and exciting to be part of the team. Visit MTVC’s blog for more on the eco-details.

Check out Baby and I in the Kitty Exam Room…Look at her. She is so relaxed and so is her momma.

Ok, so I’ll leave you with this. You will not find cold, steel tabled and white walled exam rooms here. What you will find are beautifully decorated exam rooms complete with a wood exam table, warm furniture, comfortable chairs, carpeted floors and this lovely mirror for our furry friends to gaze into.

What a refreshing experience. As the new cover of ODE Magazine says, “Companies that put soul into their businesses do better.” This concept is catching on fast.

Change is sexy and good feng shui…

Before painting a room, write positive affirmations on the walls, like the one above.

There is a new man in my life and one of his delicious qualities happens to be the way he embraces change. That and I love the way he closes his eyes before making a decision…Hmmm…

I recently helped my Philip choose paint colors for his home and suggested the idea of writing heart-centered words on the wall prior to painting. It’s a powerful tool and sets the intention for the energy in a room. This is what I found when I returned…

In feng shui, the fireplace is associated with the hearth and the heart. This is the first time in two years, the fireplace was lit. Talk about heart opening…It’s blazing.

Change is sexy and Philip, so are you.

As stated on the website, “Since 1999 Janice Arnold has been working with low income artisans in Central and East Asia to share knowledge, techniques, and skills that lead to creating marketable products worldwide.”

Bonus: The proceeds (of felt sales) benefit the artisan collective in Nepal that creates the felt. We love that.
